The mane can help get flies off of the horse's neck, too. Other than that, I don't know. To get your horse's mane to stay on one side, there are several tricks. . . . braid the hairs so that they are all on one side and will stay on that side after awhile, or put all the hair on one side and keep it there by making a very thick flour paste and gobbing it all over the top of the mane, to weigh it down (it rinses out easily). After a few days or so, it will want to stay on one side.
